After years of working hard and saving, I was excited to finally be able to afford to invest in my own home in Melbourne. Being one of the world’s most livable cities, I was very happy to put down my roots in this part of the world where I see myself living for the rest of my life.
Buying property is easier said than done. After all, I do not know the market well – where the best places to buy are, how to scrutinize an apartment for sale, and simply how to negotiate the price. I did my homework, reading tips, articles and ads online for hours. But when a friend recommended hiring an agent, I realized that I could use the help of a professional to be able to navigate through the real estate market. Being a satisfied customer of Chilli Realty – Property specialist herself, I decided to check them out.
Because Melbourne has a huge market, there are easily a couple of areas where to consider. I was then looking for someone to help me narrow down and find exactly what I was looking for. These were the things that were important to me:
A Good Investment
A property that would go up in value is of course, extremely important. No one wants to overpay for an apartment that would end up devaluing over the years.
A Great Neighborhood
The location affects the value, of course, but I was also looking for somewhere to live in. Access to public transport and basic necessities within the vicinity are important, but having a nice small park nearby for some clean air and outdoor exercise would be a plus as well.
My new abode has to be within my budget, naturally. There are certain areas of the Melbourne market that have gone up in price significantly in the past years, so I wanted to invest instead in those up-and-coming places that are still affordable, but will go up in popularity in the future.
Other than these items for consideration, I was pretty open to finding something for me in the city. My specialist was great in helping with the search, because of the following:
Access to the Real Estate Market
Although I had lived in the city for a long time and have probably seen most of it, understanding the market is another ballgame altogether. There were areas that I had never heard of, and probably never would have thought to invest in. But Chilli Realty had enough experience (50 years in all!) and contacts all over the city that they were able to introduce new neighborhoods that I might find attractive. Based on my preferences, they were able to narrow down a few places to concentrate on.
Access to Reliable Developers
There are certainly a lot of new projects popping out all over that it might be hard to distinguish which ones are actually of good quality and worth buying. My property advisors had great connections with these developers so I was able to look through some just in case I find my future residence there. It also helps because most of these pre-sold ones can be purchased at a lower price than when the project is over. Those in these hot-selling areas, on the other hand, might also be sold-out by the time you start hearing about them.
Once I found a couple that seemed great for me, Chilli Realty also helped me with the negotiations. Being one of limited funding, I really wanted to get a good price on the apartment, and they were amazing during this time. I never expected that I could find my dream home for such a great value! Even more, they also provided help bidding in auctions for some properties. It was definitely a full service that I received and this made the buying process much better.
In fact, when I reflect back on the process, I cannot imagine doing it myself. It is simply impossible to look at all residences for sale in every single street of Melbourne. In the end, it might even cost more (in terms of time and effort) than simply hiring a professional who can narrow down the choices for you and at the same time, support you in the negotiations. They also have all the information and knowledge required to buy a property, so you also benefit from what they know.
Just be sure that you ask friends or colleagues who have recently purchased real estate for a recommendation, just like I did. In order to find a great agent, read online, look at their credentials and experience. This will help you avoid falling trap to the deceptive ones out there. And before you know it, you will find yourself signing the papers for your brand new abode.

One of the most exciting yet truly exciting aspects of being a homemaker is that you do get to choose the type of furniture or even décor to go with your house. Now, this is actually more challenging if you live in an apartment simply because the furniture may not be in sync with the rest of the décor. This is particularly true if you live or rent in an apartment unit that may have certain restrictions on interior improvements. Sure there are plenty of resources talking about tips on buying furniture but a great majority of these are more geared towards houses, not necessarily apartments. I for one live in an apartment together with my husband and 2 children so I know how challenging it can be to look for furniture that really brings out the natural aesthetic beauty of a new apartment unit, especially if you are considering Hamptons style furniture.
Before I share with you some tips that I always tell my friends whenever they ask me about choosing a Hamptons style of furniture, you may want to first check out hamptonsfurniturehq website for Hamptons style furniture so you will have an idea of what we are talking about. This is actually my secret. We purchase most of our furniture online and IWGH simply does a superb job at delivering quality furniture at affordable prices. But, that is just us.
Seriously consider the overall design and style of your apartment unit. If your apartment has more metal elements to it, you can perhaps place wood elements but only as accents, not as main furniture. You can also find inspiration from home improvement magazines or even home interior design ideas.
Do not forget to measure the dimensions of your apartment unit primarily its main parts like the living room, kitchen, dining area, bedroom, and bathroom. This is one of the most neglected aspect of choosing and buying furniture. On the average, the floor area of an apartment unit is substantially smaller than a standard-sized house or even a townhouse. So, it is very important to factor this in because you simply don’t want a very bulky Hamptons style furniture that will occupy much of your space. What you want is to still have freedom of movement but at the same time create a certain aesthetic appeal that is elegant and classic.
Always consider the colour of your apartment. This will become a basis for the selection of the colour of the furniture. Make sure that it really complements the colour of the rest of the apartment unit. Here’s a tip: you can go for neutral tones for a great number of your furniture then get one or two pieces with an entirely different colour or pattern that you really enjoy.
Reflect on your lifestyle. For example, I always look for safety, durability, and quality of the Hamptons furniture because we have 2 very young kids. I clearly don’t want my kids to be exposed to various chemicals that may be present in the finishing material of the furniture. If you have a pet, you may also need to take that into consideration.
Pay good attention to the quality of the furniture. You have to understand that wood furniture often comes in three types or makes – solid, particleboard, and veneer. We have always believed that only solid wood will provide you with the highest quality furniture you can ever find. And this is something that I Wanna Go Home is particularly famous for. As much as possible I don’t recommend going for veneer furniture because its core is still pretty much made of structurally weak plywood. Speaking of plywood, you don’t want to get a furniture made of this type of material.
If you are going to shop online, I would strongly recommend carefully reading the About Page of the online furniture company. This will give you an idea of the company’s satisfaction guarantees and customer service. Their history should also reflect commitment to service and dedication to the highest possible level of quality. You can also perform a search for store reviews. You can use Google’s Product Search feature to help you get an idea of how users look at or what they think of the online furniture company. Additionally, always check the company’s return policy as well as shipping costs.
There are other tips I can share with you in choosing and buying a Hamptons style furniture. However, at the end of the day, the decision will ultimately be yours. Just look at your furniture as a reflection of your personality as well as the vibe or atmosphere that you want to radiate from your apartment unit. This is very important since you will be living with your chosen furniture in your apartment. As for my family, we are loving every minute of it.
